It’s really shocking that there are music producers who use basic or even free music recording equipment and still achieve great results. So I’m going to cover the basic recording music equipment you need to get the best sound from your home studio. In order to get the most out of your computer music recording you need to go for the best quality music production equipment.

If you are on a shoe string budget but you have an important recording session, hiring top notch studio equipment is not a bad idea. The digital music production age has made a lot of music producers to do everything in the box. If you are recording music in the box you will need a professional audio software (find out more about that on my blog).

On this online music production lesson I’m going to focus on recording audio without a mixing desk, using the internal software mixer. If you are working inside the box you won’t need a mixing desk. But if you have outboard studio gear stick around you might learn a thing or two from these free music production tips.

And if you are using VST plug-ins you won’t need a mixer, you will only need it if you are using hardware synthesizers. You just need a good audio interface with a lot of inputs. Get yourself a valve pre amp to record rich vocals and guitars. Other audio interfaces come with built in pre amps. Use DSP headphone mixes from the soundcard if you need different headphone mixes. Getting a headphone amp can bring out a good vocal performance because the singer and the producer will be able to hear exactly what is being recorded.

You can also be able to add effects to encourage a great performance. But other audio interface come with a built in headphone amp. You must also get a pop filter, if you have a good budget go for nylon but you can get amazing results with metal pop filters. If you really need hi-end quality recordings you may get yourself analog to digital converters, but they are very expensive, and I wouldn’t recommend them for newbie’s.

Avoid using USB microphones, they may be good for recording a lecture but not a professional audio performance, and if you are on a very tight budget get one with no auto gain circuits and they must have solutions for monitoring. To get the most out of your pre amps you will need an accurate monitoring. Buy a good pair of monitors, and as a professional music producer, you also need a competent sound engineer to master your tracks.

The problem with many Elvis fans is that they’re so obsessive. And they’ve got good reason to be so, Elvis was the King, after all.

But it also makes them very difficult to please when it comes to gifts. They can be very picky – and they may already have what you’re thinking of buying, or an equivalent.

So how do you find a brilliant gift for an Elvis fan?

The first and most important thing is to understand what they like. All Elvis fans are different. Some are serious collectors. They only buy original memorabilia: 45 records, original Presley posters, signed photographs and the like. Others are more light hearted: they like Elvis teddy bears and cuckoo clocks. Still others like to show their love of Elvis visibly in their clothing or jewellery.

So try to find out what they like by looking at the types of Elvis material they already have. Do they have a huge collection of old records and authentic Elvis memorabilia? Is their house filled with Elvis mugs, Elvis statues and Elvis light? Or do they regularly wear Elvis t-shirts or leather jackets with little Elvis symbols?

This will tell you what sort of thing to buy for them. A serious collector probably won’t be interested in cuddly Elvis slippers. But they may be interested in original posters or artwork.

For serious collectors the best place to look is often eBay. But do beware. The eBay listings are often dominated by people selling locks of Elvis’s hair, of snippets from his pajamas – all of questionable authenticity. You’ll be on safer ground with records, books and posters. Better still, a serious collector and fan is likely to be interested in reading about Elvis, or watching documentaries and films. As long as they don’t already have the item, they’ll appreciate it and you don’t need to worry about buying the exact authentic 1960s version.

For fun collectors, novelty is the key. Make sure you know what they already have (it’ll probably take a visit to their house to see, or a word with someone who knows them well). Then buy them something in the same vein – but that they don’t have.

Finally, for those who like to wear their love of Elvis with pride, the key is to find something that matches their style. Some may prefer gaudy items, with huge pictures of Elvis on them. Others may prefer something more subtle – where the Elvis element is simply a logo or a piece of detail. Make sure you get something in keeping with their style – and, of course, in the right size.

Where to get your Elvis gifts?

Google is your best friend here. There are hundreds of shops with Elvis memorabilia and gifts. But make sure you deal with a reputable supplier. Than means check the feedback on eBay, and make sure that an online store is well established and preferably accredited (for example with Verisign). A good guarantee and returns policy is crucial too. You just never know with Elvis fans – so the ability to send something back that just hasn’t worked out is useful.

A Beginner’s Guide to Buying Recording Gear

Playing in front of an audience is only part of the fun for some musicians, as many also enjoy recording material from the comfort of their own homes or in a professional studio. But people who are looking to buy their own recording gear must consider a number of issues before making a purchase. First and foremost, what type of recording do you want to do?

Most recording equipment can produce results that would easily be good enough for professional release, while other options could be better suited to creating multi-tracked demos. And some may want to commit a band rehearsal or live performance to disc, rather than a studio track.

Musicians in all these categories therefore need the capability to record at least in two tracks, either in a standalone digital audio device or through computer-based software. At least one microphone is also an essential requirement, although additional mics can be particularly useful when recording instruments such as drums.

And before recording, a person should ensure they have the proper cables to meet their needs, as many mics for instance contain XLR connections, while guitar amps typically have jack sockets. If the digital audio recording device only contains inputs for one type of connection, adaptors can be purchased to enable both cables to be used. Mic stands can also be useful in ensuring optimum sound for your recording, so accessories such as these are certainly a worthwhile purchase.

Recording equipment needs to have a sufficient number of inputs, particularly if the project involves recording a live band. Microphones, guitars, drums and keyboards all need to be individually input into a recording device at the same time to give producers the chance to mix each instrument in isolation.

This means that at least four tracks of simultaneous recording capability are needed, as well as MIDI inputs and outputs. Separate microphones for each instrument and vocal will also be required, along with headphones and studio monitors for playback and overdubbing.

At this stage, recording artists may benefit from the use of outboard gear such as a mic preamp, a compressor, a channel strip and a mixer that has a sufficient number of channels. Other accessories at this stage could also include direct boxes, pop filters, studio foam, monitor stands, racks and recording furniture.

But what if a project needs to be recorded on a much larger scale? A 12-channel mixer or eight-track recorder may be insufficient to be cope with this, which means more specialised top-end equipment would be needed.

Bigger projects should only be recorded on a device that can deliver at least 16 separate tracks of simultaneous recording, and a selection of headphones and monitors will be required if the producer, engineer or musician wants to listen to the track with a critical ear.

Using different types of microphone may also be useful, as using a combination of dynamic mics such as the Shure SM58, through to ribbon and condenser mics, will make sure that all types of instrument are covered.

People engaged in larger projects could further benefit from incorporating a wide array of signal processors into their recording set-up, such as mic preamps, compressors, limiters, equalisers and effects units.

And finally, a much larger and higher quality mixing desk would be needed to do justice to the music being made. At least 24 separate channels will ensure that all the sounds can be suitably recorded, isolated, manipulated and balanced to produce the optimum result.

Elvis Presley – First Exposures to Gospel Music

Elvis Aron Presley was born on January 8, 1935 as the twin of Jesse Garon Presley born about 35 minutes before Elvis stillborn in East Tupelo, Mississippi. Vernon Presley, father of Elvis, built a home in preparation for the birth. The home was a two-room shotgun style. Out back there was a pump and an outhouse. The home was lit with oil lamps when he and Gladys moved in December of 1934.

When Gladys, Elvis’s mother was twenty years old she took a job at the Tupelo Garment Plant that paid two dollars a day for a twelve-hour workday. She settled herself and her family on Kelly Street in East Tupelo where her uncles lived and had started a First Assembly of God church in a tent on a vacant lot. Gladys met Vernon Presley at a typical spiritual type church service(Guralnick 1994 Last Train to Memphis). I imagine the members of these church services sang and danced praises to God under the anointing of the spirit of God. For those who do not understand this type of worship, it was labeled a holy- roller church. I get the impression from things I heard Elvis say that he truly did not like the church to be called a “holy roller” church and felt this term to be more of a derogatory term than actually describing what went on. The correct terms are spirit of God and the anointing of God. Gladys and Vernon were married in June 1933.

The Presley family was active in church and the community. In 1937 Gladys’ uncle Gains became the only preacher at the Assembly of God Church now housed in a modest wood-framed structure on Adams Street built primarily by Gains. Many in this tiny congregation recall a very young Elvis Presley throwing himself into the hymn singing. Gladys liked to tell how when Elvis was just a little fellow, probably not more than two years old, he would slip down from her lap, make his way down the aisle and up to the platform and stand looking at the choir trying to sing with them. He could carry the tune and would watch their faces to try to do as they did (Guralnick 1994 Last Train to Memphis).

As time went on, Vernon Presley tells of how they had friends and relatives, but the three of them, Elvis, Gladys and Vernon, formed their own private world. There are no memories of Elvis ever belonging to a gang, just memories of him making cars out of apple crates, playing out behind someone’s house, going fishing once in a while. If his mother told him to be back promptly at 2:00 p.m., friends who knew him said he would be sure to return on time. Vernon described Elvis as being a gentle boy and when he asked Elvis to go hunting, Elvis replied, “Daddy, I don’t want to kill birds” (Guralnick 1994 Last Train to Memphis).”

It is pretty much agreed by story tellers that Elvis and his parents formed a gospel trio and sang in the Assembly of God church as well as traveled to various revival meetings in the area to sing and worship God. The travel was not of a professional nature, but more of just visiting churches in the area at revival times. Perhaps the most told story is when Elvis sang “Old Shep,” at the Morning Prayer program at school. He was later entered into a radio talent contest sponsored by local station WELO on Children’s Day at the fair. Elvis spoke of the event as the very first time he sang in public (Guralnick 1994 Last Train to Memphis).

Who Was Elvis Presley, the Hound Dog?

Elvis Presley had been performing live for a few years when he booked an appearance on the Steve Allen show. It was 1956 and the mainstream culture was barely able to contain the budding sexuality that his music was bursting with. This was before he was popular, but now 20 years later Elvis is so popular (to this day that Elvis Wigs are a huge seller on Halloween.)

It seems that there was a sense of containment that a lot of the older generations felt towards the new sounds and culture that was developing. Ed Sullivan agreed to have Elvis perform on his show, but only allowed him to be filmed from the waist up. It was understood that showing Elvis’ dance moves and gyrations would mean that Ed Sullivan no longer had a “family” show.

While it seems to us now a relatively tame dancing movement, pelvic gyrations, at that time, were considered very taboo, and totally inappropriate for mass viewing audiences. Parents of teenagers were often horrified at Elvis’ performance style, and Frank Sinatra called it, “a rancid smelling aphrodisiac”.

When Elvis scheduled and appearance on the Steve Allen show in July of 1956, it seemed yet another great opportunity for publicity and advancement of his career. He had been performing Hound Dog for audiences for a while at that point and had perfected his wiggling hips and dance movements. Just the previous month, he had appeared on the Milton Berle show. There, he performed “Hound Dog” to screaming fans and this recording can be found on numerous websites. While the song itself contains no explicit words or anything particularly groundbreaking musically, it was Elvis’ interpretation of it that people found offensive.

The lyrics, originally performed as a blues song by a woman, sing about a lazy good-for-nothing husband who can’t even put food on the table to feed his family. In Elvis’ version the words and music are the same, but adding his dancing to the music and the way his voice bumped and growled over the words suddenly gave it an electrically sexual connotation. The line “they said you was high-classed” which in an earlier version meant the promise of a solid husband who was a stand up citizen, could now be interpreted as in reference to a woman, where high-classed has an immediately sexual meaning.

For his appearance on the Steve Allen show, he participated in a comedy sketch and then appeared in a suit and tails with his hair flatter and more slicked back for a rendition of his famous “Hound Dog” song. Steve Allen was a composer and TV personality who often mocked popular recording artists by reading their lyrics as poems.

There are a lot of popular music songs that will seem nonsense when read as poems, but when sung, the intention is clear. When he had Elvis on as a guest performer, he not only had him dress up much more than was appropriate for his performance, but he had a live basset hound rolled out for Elvis to sing to. While some parents and conservative types were appeased and even entertained by this scenario, Elvis himself was humiliated. It was clear that the real version of “Hound Dog” required more of a hipster style of dress, and a high pompadour which got shaken out by enthusiastic dancing and full gyrations of the hips.

If you decide to dress up as the young Elvis Presley for Halloween the first thing you’ll want to do is find pictures and video of his early performances. Unfortunately, there is not much video out there, because his performance style and dancing moves, were too sexually suggestive. When he appeared on the Ed Sullivan show, the camera was instructed to shoot him only from the waist up so that it could be broadcast as family entertainment.

Now that you’ve seen some video, you have a basic idea of what you’re going for, and we can begin to assemble the outfit. You can wear either the sleek black suit or a jacket and pants, but there are a few requirements. The jacket must be loosely fitted and can be either all black or all white or light a cream or very light yellow or beige will do). The tie, if you wear one should be skinny, as this was the fashion then. Most importantly, the pants must be wide legged and loose enough to allow much movement. In many videos of Elvis, he typically stands with his legs spread wide. This ends up accentuating the movement of his legs whether it’s shaking or tapping to the beat.

The imperative for an Elvis costume at any point in his career is the hair. You absolutely must have a perfect black pompadour with the a small piece at the front flopping around. It’s even better if you begin your night with the perfectly slick hairdo, and through the fervor of your spot on Elvis impersonation. For Halloween night, depending on your plans, you may want to bring a prop. The best Elvis props are guitars, or microphones. If you watch videos of his early material, especially “Jailhouse Rock”, which he choreographed himself, you’ll see that he uses a lot of hip movement, and often bends his knees and sometimes shakes them during performances. If you’re wearing loose pants and dance this way, you’ll be sure to attract plenty of attention from the ladies. If you’re feeling particularly racy, you may even stuff your pants. It was rumored that Elvis had a pipe sewn into his pants to suggest that he was supremely well endowed. Whether he did or didn’t his dance moves and performance style made women crazy.

While Elvis was known popularly as a sex symbol, his fame was really instigated by his velvety voice and playful lyrics. If you’re dressing up as Elvis for Halloween, it’s a great idea to practice singing some of his songs. Pick the ones you like best and learn the words. Practice lowering your voice and mimicking his singing style. The best songs for a young Elvis to sing are Jailhouse Rock, Love me Tender, Hound Dog, Heartbreak Hotel, and Are you Lonesome Tonight.

Investing in genuine DJ equipment costs a bomb and this is a severe impediment to those who are planning to take up disc jockeying as a career but haven’t made the final decision yet.
