Why Wear Costumes?

Why would adults want to wear costumes? There are a few different reasons why a person who is over the age of five would want to put on special clothing. With the variety of items and themes available, a person can show his or her creativity and share something about who they are in their choice of dress-up gear.

A special party is one reason why adults would wear something other than their usual garb to an event. The party hosts may have a specific theme they want their guests to follow when choosing what they are going to wear. If, for example, the party is paying tribute to the Roaring 20s, female guests may arrive decked out in a flapper costume. Stockings with a seam up the back, a feathered or bejeweled headband and an elegant cigarette holder can be added to sky-high heels for a complete look. Men attending the same event can adopt a gangster look with a pinstripe suit, Fedora and spats.

The 50’s are another popular decade when it comes to hosting a party or a dance. Some partygoers will channel their inner Pink Lady and dress up like a member of the gang made popular by the musical, Grease. Other options for women’s costumes that reflect this era are the full poodle skirt, socks and saddle shoes. A pair of vintage sunglasses completes the look. When men want to adopt a 50’s theme in their clothing for a special event, they can put on a black leather jacket to look cool. Whatever the reason someone chooses to put on costumes, the one he or she decides on reflects who they are. There are options available for women that are sweet and sassy or even full-on sexy. Men can choose to wear an outfit that reflects who they are now or who they would like to be. Basic Gear for Recording Music

There are various gear for recording music. One type of gear operates and affects the ultimate music quality in one way, and the other in a completely different way. To create and compose excellent music with high quality receptive sound, you need to know the details of these various types of gear.

Multitrack recorders can be analog cassette tapes. It can record multiple tracks at a very limited amount of space and number of possible tracks. These are usually the cheapest multitrack recorders. Another is the Digital tape. These are removable digital tapes similar to Zip and Jazz Drives. Then there is the Hard Disk. Studio monitor, also known as the reference monitor, is one of the gear for recording music. There are loudspeakers specially designed for music production of the source material. They generally attempt to paint an accurate audio image of the material with no unnatural emphasis or de emphasis of a particular frequency.

Mixer is another gear for recording music. This is an audio device with one or more lines. It may be an electronic or mechanical instrument. An electronic mixer device mixes signals. It also offers frequency mixers, a telecommunications device used to alter the carrier frequency of a signal. Antiques, Collectibles, & Memorabilia – Do You Know the Difference?

The world of antiques can be confusing. What’s the difference between an antique and collectible? Aren’t collectibles and memorabilia really the same thing? In this month’s column, I’ll de-mystify these terms, so that you’ll be appropriately armed for your next antique adventure.

Antique

Basically, an antique is something old that has value because of aesthetic or historical reasons. Generally, if a piece is over 100 years old, it is considered an antique. Although, I do know that some people use the 50-year mark for Canadian pieces; the rationale being that Canada is a young country relative to places such as Europe and Asia. However, I’m old fashioned and apply the 100-year definition to Canadian pieces.

Collectible

A collectible is something that is less than 100 years old that has value because of aesthetic or historical reasons. This term fills the gap for valuables that aren’t quite old enough to be an antique.

One category of collectible is items with intrinsic artistic merit. A stunning Art Deco table fits into this category. It was beautiful when it was made in the 1930s, is beautiful today and will still be beautiful when it hits the 100-year old mark.

A second category is mass-produced collectibles. Beanie Babies, trading cards and Hummel figurines fit into this category. They don’t necessarily have a lot of artistic merit. But manufacturers have created desirability by producing limited editions.

Another category is items associated with particular people. For example, anything worn by the Beatles or Elvis Presley is collectible.

Memorabilia

There is a difference between collectibles and memorabilia. Collectibles are things that are ornamental. They never served an utilitarian purpose. A piece of memorabilia served a particular purpose. Movie posters, sports programs, cameras, television sets and musical instruments are all examples of items that fall into this category. Movie posters were used to sell movies. Sports programs were used to communicate information. And, cameras, television sets and musical instruments all serve a function.

Planning a Party Fit for a “King” Elvis Style

Elvis is one of the legendary performers of all time and everyone – and I do mean – everyone thinks they do the “perfect” Elvis impression. So, having an Elvis Theme party is the perfect opportunity to invite all Elvis clones young and all to show off their stuff. Guests should be encouraged to attend the Elvis Theme Party in their favorite Elvis costume or in a supporting role costume from one of Elvis’ famous movies or other performance. Guests should also be ready to perform at least one Elvis tune. Of course, many will pick the same Elvis song to perform, but I can guarantee they won’t put on any where near identical performances.

Guests should be given the opportunity to participate in an American Idol like contest based upon Elvis performances. Get some objective judges to act in the roles of Randy, Paula and Simon to critique the performances in the most positive, yet amusing ways possible. Then, when the performances are through, give the remaining guests the chance to “vote” for their favorite. As the votes are being tallied, open up the karaoke microphone to other budding songbirds that may just want to sing anything.

Guitar Books – Three Music Theory Books For Guitarists

Sooner or later any serious guitarist comes to realize that a solid theoretical background is the only way forward. Your ear can only take you so far, that’s when your musical theory can kick in and remove any musical obstacles in your way to fully expressing yourself.

Seems pretty straight forward… just go to the music shop and pick up a theory book and away we go; away we go alright… pick up the wrong book and you’ll end up more confused than you ever were before.

Musical fact of life # 1: Not all theory books are created equal.

I remember when I started my first job, it was at a music store teaching music; I had a bit of a reputation as a player in the local area playing in dance bands etc., and since I had already sold quite a bit of musical equipment for the music store based on my track record they thought I would be the obvious choice; if

the store had a potential guitar or amp customer they would leave a message with my mum, then after school I would go down to the store and demonstrate the gear.

Everything started out fine, I stumbled and fumbled my way through the guitar lessons, I’m not sure who learnt the most me or my students I know I learnt heaps everyday mostly about how not to teach.

Anyway, very early in the piece the store manager informed me that if I was going to continue teaching for the store I would need to be “qualified”; I didn’t know exactly what that entailed but it did sound scary

As it turned out what he meant was I needed to be formally qualified… just being able to play the guitar was not good enough if I was going to teach guitar for them.

The good news was they were going to pay for my lessons so that was neat… there was even more good news I could go to the theory lessons instead of having to work at the shop.

So I began my theory lessons and very soon became frustrated, confused and perplexed… things I knew worked on the bandstand the night before didn’t match up with the theory lesson the next day.

The more confused I became the more determined I was about finding the “truth”; so I started studying with other teachers to augment my “paid” lessons from the music store… boy, did that make matters worst; it seemed as if each theory teacher had their own slant on things many basic concepts did not match up.

Long story short… after a lot of playing, thinking and research I discovered….

Musical fact of life # 2: there are different types of theory… in fact there are three distinct types of theory: classical, jazz and rock/blues!

These are very broad categories they are all important and the complete musician needs to be aware of their similarities and differences.

They world is full of traditional classical theory books so I won’t discuss them here. Modern theory as applied to improvisation and the music of our time is what I’m about… it’s great to know what happened 400 years ago but it’s unlikely to help you secure that rock gig next Friday night,

Title: Modern Method For Guitar – By William Leavitt (Berklee Press)

Overview: if you want to get in on the ground floor and study guitar and theory as applied to the guitar fretboard, this is the place to start!

Available in three volumes; the first sixty pages of volume one covers the basics of reading music in the first position of the guitar.

Part two of Berklee volume one introduces the five standard fingering patterns for reading music over the fretboard.

Title: Jazz Studies – by Bruce Clarke (ed clinch v.i.s.e text)

Overview:A fantastic book that takes off were the Berklee book volume one finishes; the Jazz Studies book is ideal to use in conjunction with Berklee Volume two.

Fantastic explanations of how modes, cycle 5 and cycle 7 concepts work Jazz studies is a great introduction into the world of improvisation, if you have studied traditional theory this book will “blow the lid off” how you look at theory. Step by step instruction, very easy to understand. Highly recommended.
