If You Dress Up Like Elvis at Halloween, Would You Be a Ghost?

02 Sep

By Brett R Alexander

This would be considered the ultimate in Rock n Roll Costumes for Halloween, you would be a ghost and your favorite rock star.

It’s Halloween time again and you are feeling a little rebellious, in the 1950s sense of the term. You decide you want to rock n roll for Halloween but can’t decide which way to go. Should you attempt the early 1960’s Beatles look of a suit, tie, and bowl cut? Or how about the Glam Rock God look of the 80’s with leopard print leather pants, tight t shirts and tons of makeup in hand?

When it comes to using a rock n roll theme for Halloween, naturally the easiest look to pull off is that of the King of Rock N Roll himself- Elvis Presley. Due to his immense popularity, his look has been impersonated and emulated for decades and can be accomplished with ease. You can take two routes to accomplish this look as well with the first choice being to just purchase pre made Elvis Rock n Roll Costumes and the second and more adventurous choice being the creation of your own custom Elvis Presley costume. If you want to take the quick and painless route of purchasing a pre made costume, this can be accomplished as easily as heading online to any Halloween costume store. If a Halloween store is worth its weight in candy corn they should have at least a handful of pre made Elvis costumes ready to order. If you want to take the “scenic” and adventurous route of making an Elvis costume yourself, here are a few easy to do steps and tips to get you on your way to Rock N Roll Royalty.

The first thing you need to do is find yourself a pair of white polyester pants. You can more than likely find these at your local thrift store as it isn’t too often that you see anyone wearing white polyester pants these days. After that you need to find a matching white dress shirt to make it seem as if you are wearing a white polyester suit. Once you have the basics down it is time to find the gaudiest belt known to man. You can probably get this at a local thrift or vintage store as well or you can make your own using a sash. The Elvis look isn’t complete without a cape so that’s next on the list. I don’t know about you but there aren’t very many cape stores around my neighborhood so your best option may be to use some old white curtains tied around the neck with some string.

So you have the outfit all taken care of and now here is where the real fun part begins. Go to an arts and crafts store and purchase some glitter, sequins, and rhinestones to accent your outfit. If you have a glue gun great but if not some super glue will do the trick as well. Decorate the seams of the pants, chest and sleeves of the shirt and back of the cape as you please. Once you are all sparkly and glittery you just need a few more things to make this Rock n Roll Costume complete. Find a large pair of sunglasses, either grow some mutton chops or make your own, and get some hair gel to create that famous Elvis hairdo. Once you have done all of this you are ready for a night out on the town in your glittery cape and polyester pants!

10 Guitarists You Should Have As An Influence

06 Aug

By Adrian Martin

One of the most important factors in shaping a guitarists sound are the influences that musician has. What music they have listened to – what licks and riffs they have learned – what they’re musical ear has picked up. For a musician this is almost as important as what you eat – listen to the wrong tracks and your playing will sound tired and lifeless – listen to the right tracks and you’ll be blazing with the best of them – here’s 10 influences we think every guitarist should have.

1. Robert Johnson

Right let’s get the obvious one out of the way first – want to learn blues – listen to Robert Johnson – period – cited as influence from everyone from Clapton to Page – he is the delta blues – listen to any best of Robert Johnson and you could be forgiven that there are two guitarists playing.

2. BB King

Picking up an Electric Guitar where Robert Johnson left his acoustic – BB King is electric blues personified – once again revered by everyone – distinct tone and sound – a gem!

3. Chuck Berry

Picking up the blues and turning it Pop – classic riffs – a classic “loose” style – You can hear Chuck Berry in everyone from Keith Richards to Radiohead.

4. Scotty Moore

If Elvis was “The King” then Scotty Moore was a prince – completing Elvis’s early line up – Scotty’s country licks echo’d through the next 50 years.

5. Jimmy Page

The first true heavy rock guitarist? Arguably – listen to any Led Zep track and listen to a true rock god.

6. Eddie Van Halen

“Eruption” – need we say more – an influence for over 20 years of speed freek fingerboard tapping axe wielders.

7. Charlie Christian

World renowned jazz guitarist – early adopter of the electric guitar and someone who could hold their own against any horn section he was confronted with

8. Django Reinhardt

Virtuoso jazz player renowned for his gypsy style fingerpicking

9. Steve Jones

Not technically proficient by any means and without a bucket load of albums but this sex pistol guitarist created a whole army of followers in the late 70’s

10. Steve Cropper

Soul maestro – riff meister and writer extraordinaire – Steve Cropper has played with the best from Booker T, Bill Withers and Otis Redding he is Mr Soul Guitar.

ShanzuGuitars.com offers the latest guitar news, gear resources and reviews, tools and tips for budding guitarists everywhere.

Great Father’s Day Gift Ideas

21 Jul

By Phoenix Roberts

Father’s Day gifts can be a tricky proposition. Fortunately, most men have similar basic needs and wants that don’t change much, regardless of their age or situation. This Father’s Day gift buying guide will help you figure out how to buy a Father’s Day gift that will tell Dear Old Dad that you care — specifically, that you care enough to think about what he would really like to receive on Father’s Day.

Electronics — Gifts for the Techno-Dad

GPS

Men don’t like asking directions, so help Dad get where he’s going with a global positioning system. A basic handheld GPS or mobile GPS unit displays coordinates over a map. Fancier GPS systems go from a simple dash-mount GPS navigation system to multi-component in-dash car audio-video units loaded with everything you want and a few things you may never figure out.

LCD TV

Most LCD televisions are called flat panel televisions because they are thin and light enough to hang on the wall like a painting. LCD technology has seen huge improvements in recent years and LCD TVs are becoming the most popular TV set. Big screens are fabulous, but not a necessity — a 26-inch LCD TV is affordably priced and works in most rooms. For the serious movie or sports fan, a 32-inch to 42-inch wide-screen HDTV is a thing to be envied. If you have a very large TV room or just like your action life-size, go 52 inches or bigger!

Home Theater Audio

If Dad already has a widescreen TV, well, what’s dazzling video without astounding audio? Pick out a home theater! For small rooms, a home-theater-in-a-box — a package containing the amplifier, tuner and speakers — is enough but not too much. For Dads who never shout, “Turn your stereo down!” go with surround sound speakers — a multi-speaker system identified by number: 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1; the “.1″ is the subwoofer (the deep notes); the other number is how many speakers are in the group. Spread them around the room and they’ll reproduce theater-quality audio.

iPods & MP3 players

Dad probably grew up with “boomboxes” or “ghetto blasters,” big radio-cassette tape players. Today’s Dad still wants to listen to Elvis Presley or Johnny Cash or Rachmaninov (or maybe SheDaisy), but on pocket-sized iPods and MP3 players. iPods help keep distractions down while working. MP3 players make excellent companions driving or exercising. If music isn’t Dad’s thing, help keep the gray matter from getting stale with audio books.

Video game consoles and games

Lots of Dads grew up with video games then outgrew them. Now that they have children to game with, video games make brilliant Father’s Day gift ideas. A new video game console can be a great way to get some one-on-one time with each child. It’s also a way for Mom and Dad to keep an eye on the video games the kids are playing.

Sports — Gifts for the Active Dad

Camping

Think you’ve run out of Father’s Day ideas because Dad has a room full of electronics? Here’s an idea: Turn them off! That’s right, shut them down, throw the kids in the car and take to the great outdoors! What good is a Father’s Day present that brings the whole world into your living room if you never get out and experience the real thing? Fishing gear gifts or camping gifts for Dad can be simple and economical, or you can buy enough camp gear for a crusade. (By the way, if Dad really isn’t the Lewis and Clark type, Mom might still get him to pitch a family tent in the backyard, if she buys a cozy double sleeping bag to go with it!)

Golf

Whether Dad is a duffer or the local club pro, if the man likes his links, he needs something. (Don’t buy him golf lessons unless he knows he needs them.) Fortunately, the great thing about golf gifts is the range — not the driving, range, the price range! They start with useful, inexpensive gear like rangefinders and electronic scorecards, going all the way to a golf club set including the best handmade woods or latest high-tech irons.

Do the Q!

BBQ, that is. Barbecue may be America’s most popular lawn sport, and like any great athlete, the right equipment is important in making the point spread. A classic charcoal grill or a new-style gas grill plus grill accessories are cooking essentials that abound in the home store. By the way, Dad will enjoy this even more with Father’s Day baskets full of gourmet foods, tasty treats or other goodies!

Games

Dads work hard, so they appreciate Father’s Day gifts that help them relax. “Poker night with the boys” is more common in late night reruns than most suburban homes, but it hasn’t gone the way of the vinyl record yet. Poker is more than just a way to trade money; it is something to do with the hands while men talk about manly things. Dad doesn’t gamble? Not a problem with the many indoor games on today’s market. Board games include chess, backgammon or darts. For the bigger game room, a billiards table or billiards accessories. They are all gift ideas for Dads they will be grateful for every time they play.

Other gift ideas — Gifts for the hard-to-buy-for Dad

Gear and gizmos work for most Dads, but not all. Personalized Father’s Day gifts — meaning gifts that reflect Dad’s personality, not just something with his name or initials — require thought. For Dads with other tastes, Father’s Day can be an interesting challenge:

Superior style

Men’s clothing and men’s jewelry are great choices for the Dad who’s serious about his appearance, but it can be tricky. Solid research for truly personal items means you avoid the ever-present Father’s Day gift-giving risk — getting something you like instead of something Dad likes. Some Dads always dress casual; some always dress for business; some like to mix it up. Whatever his taste, there are plenty of Father’s Day gift ideas in the clothing store (especially in the designer section!). Likewise, the right men’s jewelry, including fine men’s watches, could be a Father’s Day gift that really hits the mark; one he’ll wear for life and could become a treasured family heirloom.

Academic advancement

For Father’s Day ideas for the practical Dads whose business or profession demands they keep up with the latest advances, or for Dads who simply like a good tale well told, choose something from among the classics or latest releases in books, movies, music and videos.

“Back in my day…”

Is Dad waxing nostalgic? Is he always talking about “the way things were”? If so, maybe a retro-gift is the Father’s Day gift he’ll love. Get him a candlestick telephone, a collectible framed photo showing someone he admires, a collegiate souvenir or something else to remind him — with a gentle smile — that’s he’s getting on in years.

The Pro from Dover!

Is Dad a professional man? Most professionals still carry briefcases or attache cases and these do wear out eventually. Practical gifts are excellent Father’s Day gift ideas for the practical man. Pick a prime-leather business case or some new luggage.

What’s his size?

Getting the right size can be a tricky proposition. If you want to get personalized Father’s Day gifts like clothes that really fit well, take a look at what Dad wears most often. Generally, this is what fits him best. If you can’t measure the Man, measure the clothing.

What doesn’t work on Father’s Day?

A keychain — unless it contains keys to a new car, leave this one at the auto parts counter.

“Oh, I don’t really want anything.” Yeah, right.

Rock Climbing Jargon

08 Jul

By Richard Chapo

If you are looking for an inexpensive extreme sport that is pure adrenaline and addicting, rock climbing may be just what you need. When you start out, you are going to need to know some of the following lingo.

Rock Climbing Jargon

Rock climbing is one of those niche sports that gets little publicity, but is incredibly popular. It also happens to be one of the more adrenaline pumping things you can get out and do. Since it is pretty much you and the face of a click, the costs are limited to shoes and the gear to keep you from falling to your death. Put another way, it isn’t going to break the bank. Eventually, however, you will start planning climbing trips to Thailand and other exotic places, and it will cost a few bucks. Trust me, it is worth it.

If you are going to have a go at climbing, you need to know some of the basic jargon. Here we go…

“Elvis” – refers to the reaction of newer climbers when they first go beyond the comfort zone in the height of a climb. If you blow through 80 feet or so and start getting stressed, one of your legs may start to gyrate. It looks like you are dancing like Elvis, thus the name. To stop the Elvis, stop looking down at the ground and take slow, deep breaths.

Free climbing is the art of rock climbing without safety ropes. The advantage is it represents the purist form of climbing and is a quicker trip than with safety equipment. The disadvantage, of course, involves the fact there is nothing to save you if a fall occurs. At a minimum, we are talking broken bones. In a worst case scenario, well, you can guess. As a beginner, you should never, ever free climb.

Bouldering refers to rock climbing on large boulders found in valleys and other areas around the country. Bouldering is both fun and a good place to practice your technique. Boulders almost always have unique angles and edges, which can make them technically challenging. Since you are usually no more than ten feet off the ground, falling usually only damages your pride.

Buildering is rock climbing on buildings. Insanely fun, but also illegal. Falling is not recommended. Buildering is definitely not for the beginning climber. If you ignore this advice, make sure to take your driver’s license with you so the hospital will know who you are.

Chalk is a powder used by many to keep their hands dry during climbs. The chalk is kept in a chalk bag on your waste. You dip your hands in as you need to dry them off. If you are climbing in some remote location, it is highly advisable you wash the chalk off before driving home. Officers of the law, particularly Highway Patrolmen, often do not understand the difference between climbing chalk and other off white substances. I kid you not!

As you can image, there are plenty of other rock climbing terms you need to know. The above list will at least give you a head start on the process.

Rick Chapo is with Nomad Journals – makers of rock climbing journals that make great gifts for him.

Why Wear Costumes?

29 May

By Andy West

Why would adults want to wear costumes? There are a few different reasons why a person who is over the age of five would want to put on special clothing. With the variety of items and themes available, a person can show his or her creativity and share something about who they are in their choice of dress-up gear.

A special party is one reason why adults would wear something other than their usual garb to an event. The party hosts may have a specific theme they want their guests to follow when choosing what they are going to wear. If, for example, the party is paying tribute to the Roaring 20s, female guests may arrive decked out in a flapper costume. Stockings with a seam up the back, a feathered or bejeweled headband and an elegant cigarette holder can be added to sky-high heels for a complete look. Men attending the same event can adopt a gangster look with a pinstripe suit, Fedora and spats.

The 50’s are another popular decade when it comes to hosting a party or a dance. Some partygoers will channel their inner Pink Lady and dress up like a member of the gang made popular by the musical, Grease. Other options for women’s costumes that reflect this era are the full poodle skirt, socks and saddle shoes. A pair of vintage sunglasses completes the look. When men want to adopt a 50’s theme in their clothing for a special event, they can put on a black leather jacket to look cool. The classic bowling shirt ensemble is another popular choice for those who want to appear as something other than the standard “greaser.” The man who wants to make a memorable impression on the other guests at a 50’s bash could always go as Elvis. A white jumpsuit adorned with glitter is a unique look for male partygoers. Adding an Elvis wig and sunglasses (complete with attached sideburns) completes this look.

When the Swinging 60’s are being feted at an event, there are a number of looks that the ladies can adopt if they choose. A woman can go to the party as a hippie chick, complete with a patchwork skirt or flowered pants. Think long, straight hair with a headband and yellow or blue-lensed “granny” glasses to complete the look. Another option in costuming is to dress up as a go-go dancer in a brightly colored mini dress and boots. Men can also go for a hippie look when they are attending a 60’s theme bash. A long, fringed vest and blue jeans can be combined with a long wig, glasses and a headband. Bright floral-patterned bell bottom pants and a peace medallion also bring back memories of that time. A man attending a 60’s party may also choose to wear a tie-dye T-shirt and a Rasta or an Afro wig for an interesting look.

Whatever the reason someone chooses to put on costumes, the one he or she decides on reflects who they are. There are options available for women that are sweet and sassy or even full-on sexy. Men can choose to wear an outfit that reflects who they are now or who they would like to be. The main reason for donning something other than everyday garments is that it can be a fun way to express one’s self. Do you remember why children play dress-up? It’s fun. Why not pretend to be someone else and try on a different personality for a few hours?

Basic Gear for Recording Music

25 May

By Victor Epand

There are various gear for recording music. One type of gear operates and affects the ultimate music quality in one way, and the other in a completely different way. To create and compose excellent music with high quality receptive sound, you need to know the details of these various types of gear.

Multitrack recorders can be analog cassette tapes. It can record multiple tracks at a very limited amount of space and number of possible tracks. These are usually the cheapest multitrack recorders. Another is the Digital tape. These are removable digital tapes similar to Zip and Jazz Drives. Then there is the Hard Disk. The multitracker is a form of a hard drive of a computer, which will enable you to store much more work than a tape. Some hard drives can also be upgraded at memory and they are removable.

Another is the Removable Disk. They are removable analog disks that can store more information than cassettes. The disk is usually specific to the manufacturer. The other is the CD, which includes TASCAM CC 22MKIII, a Pro CD recorder with MP3 playback and ROLAND CD 2, an audio recorder that can record sound onto Compact Flash and CD burner.

Microphone is the most important gear for recoding music. The utility value of your microphone depends on two factors, one is the quality and the other is the consistency. Consistency is important, as psychological factors are so great in the perception of sound and because eventual usages of your sound resources may result in arbitrary segments played in juxtaposition.

Studio monitor, also known as the reference monitor, is one of the gear for recording music. There are loudspeakers specially designed for music production of the source material. They generally attempt to paint an accurate audio image of the material with no unnatural emphasis or de emphasis of a particular frequency.

Mixer is another gear for recording music. This is an audio device with one or more lines. It may be an electronic or mechanical instrument. An electronic mixer device mixes signals. It also offers frequency mixers, a telecommunications device used to alter the carrier frequency of a signal. It supports audio mixing console, an electronic device for combining, routing and changing the level of tone or dynamics of two or more audio signals. It can also combine 15 or more video signals. It offers mode mixer, a telecommunications device for handling signals on optical fibers.

Audio interface with in and out configuration, complete with preamps, is one of the perfect gear for music recording. It offers routing of discrete output to a mixer or directly driving it to a surround sound system.

Studio Signal Processor is another gear for music recording. An audio signal processing is the processing of a representation of auditory signals or sound. The representation can be digital or analog. An analog representation is usually electrical and the voltage level represents the air pressure waveform of the sound. Whereas a digital signal representation expresses the pressure waveform as a sequence of symbols, usually binary numbers, which permit digital signal processing. The processing methods and application areas include storage, level compression, data compression, transmission, enhancement for example equalization, filtering, noise cancellation, echo or reverb removal or addition and many more.

The above mentioned gears for recording music are some of the basic necessities that makes a complete recording unit and added to that there are few other accessories such as bag and cases, cables, headphones, and many more.

Victor Epand is an expert consultant for music gear, speakers, and microphones. You can find the best marketplace for music gear, speakers, and microphones at these 3 sites: music gear, music equipment, multitrack recorder, Mixer, speakers, and laser microphones, parabolic microphone.

DJ Equipment Speakers – So You Want to Be a DJ

05 May

By C L Moore

So, you want to be a DJ; you know the center of attention, the life of the party. That is a worthwhile and potentially lucrative goal that takes desire, skill, and most importantly, the right DJ equipment speakers and gear. After all, it will not matter how good your mixes are if they cannot be heard.

You are probably interested in this line of entertainment because you heard and observed a great DJ. And, you were most likely blown away by the energy, creativity, and skill with which the DJ operated their DJ equipment CD player and DJ speakers. While you cannot buy your skill and technique as a DJ (these need to be developed over time) you can buy good equipment and gear. The proper equipment will help you immensely in the start up phase of your new career.

Learn From the Best

Make it a point to seek out a performance by one of the DJs you would like to use as an example. You want to learn what gear they use, and how they use it. Chances are they will have a full range of DJ equipment to cover any and all requirements. The gear they have and use should serve as a guide for what you need to have a chance to do well. Some of the equipment, such as the turntable or the multi-channel mixer, will take practice and skill to use easily and properly. However, the DJ equipment CD player, and your various speakers, should be fairly familiar to you. You can use this DJ equipment right out of the gate to provide the crowd with some exciting beats, and good music flow.

Be One With Your DJ Equipment

Your goal should be to have your use of equipment to be second-nature, or a natural feeling activity. You do not want to be thinking about the equipment; rather you want to be setting up the next sounds, or mixes and the like. Also, remember that you will be announcing between tunes and mixes, so you do not want to be having to work too hard with the equipment. You need to look, sound, and be cool.

Keep your ultimate goal in mind at all times. You want the crowd moving and grooving and busting, not sitting and talking. If you get the crowd involved and keep them up, you host and employer will be happy; and, your wallet will not be as empty as it was the day before.

C L has extensive experience with DJ equipment speakers He specializes in providing fully integrated equipment systems for DJs and has trained many individuals in the acoustics and proper setup of audio equipment systems. His pet peeve is an ill-balanced audio sound reproduction setup and he believes in transparency and naturalness in all things acoustic. To be unnoticed is the supreme compliment.

Free Computer Music Recording Tips – Basic Recording Music Equipment

28 Apr

By Gugulethu Mokwebo

It’s really shocking that there are music producers who use basic or even free music recording equipment and still achieve great results. So I’m going to cover the basic recording music equipment you need to get the best sound from your home studio. In order to get the most out of your computer music recording you need to go for the best quality music production equipment.

If you are on a shoe string budget but you have an important recording session, hiring top notch studio equipment is not a bad idea. The digital music production age has made a lot of music producers to do everything in the box. If you are recording music in the box you will need a professional audio software (find out more about that on my blog).

On this online music production lesson I’m going to focus on recording audio without a mixing desk, using the internal software mixer. If you are working inside the box you won’t need a mixing desk. But if you have outboard studio gear stick around you might learn a thing or two from these free music production tips.

And if you are using VST plug-ins you won’t need a mixer, you will only need it if you are using hardware synthesizers. You just need a good audio interface with a lot of inputs. Get yourself a valve pre amp to record rich vocals and guitars. Other audio interfaces come with built in pre amps. Use DSP headphone mixes from the soundcard if you need different headphone mixes. Getting a headphone amp can bring out a good vocal performance because the singer and the producer will be able to hear exactly what is being recorded.

You can also be able to add effects to encourage a great performance. But other audio interface come with a built in headphone amp. You must also get a pop filter, if you have a good budget go for nylon but you can get amazing results with metal pop filters. If you really need hi-end quality recordings you may get yourself analog to digital converters, but they are very expensive, and I wouldn’t recommend them for newbie’s.

Avoid using USB microphones, they may be good for recording a lecture but not a professional audio performance, and if you are on a very tight budget get one with no auto gain circuits and they must have solutions for monitoring. To get the most out of your pre amps you will need an accurate monitoring. Buy a good pair of monitors, and as a professional music producer, you also need a competent sound engineer to master your tracks.

Do your research first and read up reliable reviews before buying your ideal recording music equipment, and don’t waste money on poor gear.

A Beginner’s Guide to Buying Recording Gear

20 Apr

By Jonathan Richard Meager

Playing in front of an audience is only part of the fun for some musicians, as many also enjoy recording material from the comfort of their own homes or in a professional studio. But people who are looking to buy their own recording gear must consider a number of issues before making a purchase. First and foremost, what type of recording do you want to do?

Most recording equipment can produce results that would easily be good enough for professional release, while other options could be better suited to creating multi-tracked demos. And some may want to commit a band rehearsal or live performance to disc, rather than a studio track.

Musicians in all these categories therefore need the capability to record at least in two tracks, either in a standalone digital audio device or through computer-based software. At least one microphone is also an essential requirement, although additional mics can be particularly useful when recording instruments such as drums.

And before recording, a person should ensure they have the proper cables to meet their needs, as many mics for instance contain XLR connections, while guitar amps typically have jack sockets. If the digital audio recording device only contains inputs for one type of connection, adaptors can be purchased to enable both cables to be used. Mic stands can also be useful in ensuring optimum sound for your recording, so accessories such as these are certainly a worthwhile purchase.

Recording equipment needs to have a sufficient number of inputs, particularly if the project involves recording a live band. Microphones, guitars, drums and keyboards all need to be individually input into a recording device at the same time to give producers the chance to mix each instrument in isolation.

This means that at least four tracks of simultaneous recording capability are needed, as well as MIDI inputs and outputs. Separate microphones for each instrument and vocal will also be required, along with headphones and studio monitors for playback and overdubbing.

At this stage, recording artists may benefit from the use of outboard gear such as a mic preamp, a compressor, a channel strip and a mixer that has a sufficient number of channels. Other accessories at this stage could also include direct boxes, pop filters, studio foam, monitor stands, racks and recording furniture.

But what if a project needs to be recorded on a much larger scale? A 12-channel mixer or eight-track recorder may be insufficient to be cope with this, which means more specialised top-end equipment would be needed.

Bigger projects should only be recorded on a device that can deliver at least 16 separate tracks of simultaneous recording, and a selection of headphones and monitors will be required if the producer, engineer or musician wants to listen to the track with a critical ear.

Using different types of microphone may also be useful, as using a combination of dynamic mics such as the Shure SM58, through to ribbon and condenser mics, will make sure that all types of instrument are covered.

People engaged in larger projects could further benefit from incorporating a wide array of signal processors into their recording set-up, such as mic preamps, compressors, limiters, equalisers and effects units.

And finally, a much larger and higher quality mixing desk would be needed to do justice to the music being made. At least 24 separate channels will ensure that all the sounds can be suitably recorded, isolated, manipulated and balanced to produce the optimum result.

Used DJ Equipment

13 Apr

By Richard Romando

Used or previously owned equipment is an alternative to buying expensive original gear. Investing in genuine DJ equipment costs a bomb and this is a severe impediment to those who are planning to take up disc jockeying as a career but haven’t made the final decision yet. Essential parts of the DJ equipment are turntables; CD, MP3 or DVD players; and sound mixers. Each of these parts costs hundreds of dollars and can really set back the budget. However, the consolation is that all these parts are available in used condition at lower rates and in fairly good qualities.

Most stores retail their used equipment online. There are also individuals who want to get rid of their old equipment and they advertise for them online. Internet advertisements for previously owned equipment contain the names of the equipment along with names of the makers and their versions. Features present with the gear are mentioned. It is considered ethical to mention the period for which the stuff has been in use and what kind of use it was – light or heavy. Sometimes, pictures of the appliance are posted along with the advertisement.

Portals like eBay sell several items of used DJ equipment. There are various other websites like Birdland Music, Calibex, Tom Lee Music, Pro Mix, etc. which are dedicated only to selling new and used DJ equipment. Some of these websites require registration to buy and sell equipment. Funds are exchanged through wire transfer and transactions can be either worldwide or local.

Apart from online transactions, there are many music stores who stock used DJ equipment. Even peripheral components like headphones and speakers can be obtained at extremely low prices.

Sellers of used equipment usually tweak equipment before reselling them. This includes improvement of their quality as well as amelioration of their looks. This is called refurbishing the equipment and is a very common practice employed by used equipment sellers. Due to this, they can charge a few extra dollars from the second customer and earn their profit.

Buying used equipment is entirely at the buyer’s risk. In most cases, there are no guarantees and warranties, and it is made clear to the buyer that all liabilities are at their sole risk. Some store owners do not issue a receipt of the sale. Even insurance companies shirk from covering used equipment. It must not be expected from used equipment that they would function for a long time.

However this is not true most of the time. Sometimes professional DJs keep selling their equipment and buying new ones whenever they are launched with additional features. Such equipment is rarely used and is almost as good as the original.
