There is a Priscilla costume offered for those couples that wish to make believe they are the King and his wife.

This does not frequently call for to be bought. Pricilla did not have an onstage role as Elvis’s wife. But they were married in the 60’s and 70’s and the form back then must be matched. One of the nice items about any Priscilla costume is that there was always a bunch of leg showing, thus this was the modern day knee-high boots can be found and used. This way, the Priscilla costume will just appear like the king’s wife.

Investing in Rock and Roll – Memorabilia and Collectibles – What You Should Know

One of the most common questions I get from people who visit the RARE is where to start as a new collector. Collecting historically significant rock-n-roll items has definitely turned from a fan’s hobby into a lucrative investment opportunity. But, if you are just getting into the game, here are a few suggestions to help you make the most of your investments.

1. Supply & Demand

Autographed memorabilia is a great collectible. It is limited just by the fact that the Artist had to take the time to sign it. Be sure the item is authentic and comes with pictures of the signing of at all possible.

The best way to collect signed items is to get them yourself at an artist appearance. Michael Anthony (Original bassist for Van Halen) was at the store this summer singing autographs and taking photos with fans to promote his hot sauces and a new product – miniature replicas of his most famous bass guitars.

One of the new miniature guitars Michael was promoting was a replica Yamaha bass. He noticed that certain marks were missing on the back of one of the models he was signing and said, “this is from the first batch and doesn’t have the marks on the back. The next batch should be corrected.” This means the item is even more limited and more valuable.

If an item is numbered, look for lower numbers. Typically, the lower the number, the more valuable the item. An example would be a Limited Edition photograph of David Bowie by Jeanne Rice – number 1 of 100. Size, print quality and framing also contribute to the value of this item, but most important is that it is 1 of 100 that will ever be sold in the marketplace.

Limited pieces will be accompanied by some sort of documentation declaring the total number of pieces in the collection. In some cases the piece itself is not numbered, but the number is noted on the documentation or box. One example is this Elvis 1968 Comeback Cookie Jar. This is one of only 2400 to ever be manufactured. Limited and breakable – now that’s the recipe for a great collectible.

2. Age AND Beauty

Older is typically better, but if the item is in disrepair, it can bring the value down significantly. It is increasingly important to keep Rock-n-Roll collectibles protected. The fastest way to preserve and protect your memorabilia is to frame it in acid-free mat and UV glass.

A great example is a laundry ticket signed by Jim Morrison of The Doors in 1969 worth $6,000 in its current presentation. Unframed and unprotected, the signature could fade away and item become a worthless piece of paper.

Framing can also instantly increase the value of the item just by improving the presentation. One example is a Rolling Stones Autographed Guitar unframed for $4950. A very similar guitar protected in framed presentation is priced significantly higher at $6995. Another great example are Picture Discs. Picture discs are limited promotional pressings of vinyl records to promote bands. Just by knowing the number of discs in the pressing and putting that information on a plaque in a nice frame, you take an unframed item that might sell for under $50 and make it worth 2-4 times that amount.

Original packaging is also important. Not only does the condition of the item affect the value, but the packaging plays a great part as well. Purchase toys and figurines in pairs. One to play with and one to keep tucked away in the original package as an investment. The trick is to buy when the item comes into the marketplace, not after they stop making it. A great example are three 18″ action figures with sound made by the same manufacturer. The Iron Maiden 18″ Eddie figure was available for a couple of years, but now is no longer available (like a lot of Iron Maiden, get ready for an IM drought). The Freddy Mercury of Queen 18″ figure has the same story, no longer available. Lastly, John Lennon 18″ figure is still available, but we don’t know how long. At any time, they too could go off the market and instantly increase in value due to rule #1 (supply and demand). If you can find these items in original packaging, they will appreciate more than those without.

3. Value is Highly Subjective

Collecting rock-n-roll memorabilia is a labor of love. The value of an item is ultimately decided by the person who collects it. If you love the Grateful Dead, always went to their shows, always bought a concert poster at every show, and you missed the Day on the Green October 9, 1976 at Oakland Coliseum Stadium where the Who opened for the Dead; then you’ll pay more for the original concert poster for that show. Why? Because you love the Grateful Dead. That poster may be worthless to someone else who doesn’t dig the Dead. Even Original Concert posters from the most modern and recent bands may have been $25 at the concert, but worth $100 to a fan who missed out on that concert. An item is only worth what the market will bear.

Below are some great examples of what the market can do for the value of Rock-n-Roll Memorabilia.

A Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album signed by all four Beatles recently sold for $27,500 to a private collector increasing it’s value 90 times in 23 years.

Bo Diddley’s autographed square-shape guitar with travel-stickered case hand-made for Dick Clarke – sold at auction for $9,600 in 2006. Today’s estimated value ($30,000 – $40,000).

Eric Clapton’s guitar, otherwise known as “Blackie” sold at auction for $959,500 in 2004 far beyond Christie’s Auction House Estimate of $100,000-150,000.

Whether you collect for re-sale, investment or just for bragging rights, now is a great time to own a piece of Rock & Roll history. Happy collecting!

Elvis Fancy Dress – A Look at 3 Elvis Presley Costumes From the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies

Elvis fancy dress has always been a popular choice of outfit at Halloween, New Year’s Eve and even 70’s themed parties. However, most of the Elvis Presley costumes that you see are from his Las Vegas period, during the seventies, and while there are some wonderful examples from this period, it is worth knowing that there are equally some great Elvis fancy dress outfits available from the fifties and sixties as well.

Elvis Presley had a long and successful career, which covered many different styles, both musically and visually. Therefore, it seems a shame in a way, that most of the outfits that you see at these costume parties are representing the over-weight Elvis, towards the end of his career.

Below are my personal favourite Elvis Presley outfits from each of the three decades he was active, as the King of Rock and Roll, namely the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s:

1950’s – Jailhouse Rock outfit

Jailhouse Rock was an American motion picture, which was released in 1957, where Elvis plays an ex-convict working in the music industry. At the time that the film was released, it was considered almost scandalous and is certainly one of Presley’s most well known films.

The outfit worn in the the famous dance sequence through a jail cell block, which is considered by many to be the forerunner of the modern music video, is now available to buy as a fancy dress costume.

This great looking outfit includes a black and white striped shirt, a black printed jacket with a prisoner number on the left-hand side and a pair of matching black printed trousers.

1960’s – The ‘68 Comeback Special costume

Elvis starred in a 1968 United States television special, sponsored by Singer (the Sewing Machine Company), which is commonly referred to as the ‘68 Comeback Special, because of the impact it had on his future career.

You can now buy a fancy dress equivalent of the famous black leather jacket and trousers, which Presley wore in the ‘68 Comeback Special, that looks simply stunning.

1970’s – “American Eagle” suit

The white “American Eagle” jumpsuit, designed by Bill Belew, was made famous by Elvis during the “Aloha from Hawaii” music concert, which was broadcast live via satellite in January, 1973, and which was the most watched broadcast by an individual entertainer in television history.

The “American Eagle” costume consists of a white jumpsuit, with a printed gold eagle on the front that has been decorated with red and blue faux gems.

When you think of the legendary Elvis Presley, more than likely the first things that come to mind are his music and his larger than life presence. In geographical terms, you may associate the King of Rock and Roll with Las Vegas, where he enjoyed much success late in his career, or Memphis, base of his palatial Graceland. Yet, don’t rule out Nashville if you plan a pilgrimage of Elvisian proportions. There are quite a few landmarks around Music City that either pay homage to the King or represent various points of his career. Here are just a few must-sees for fans.

1) Willie Nelson and Friends General Store and Museum: It may seem like most popular country music stars have their own attractions in the area, but when you visit the family-operated tribute to Willie Nelson you’re guaranteed to have a good time. Among the wealth of personal memorabilia on display one will find Willie’s memories of his encounters with Elvis and other music greats like Porter Wagoner and Patsy Cline. 2) Country Music Hall of Fame Museum: How can you have an attraction with a name like this and not include one of the most successful entertainers of the 20th century? Granted, Elvis is known more for his rock hits, but the King’s presence is grandly felt in his gospel roots and on country recordings. 3) Grand Ole Opry: One might think Elvis was a regular performer here, but in truth Presley only performed here once in 1954. Contrary to his stage presence, that night didn’t go well for the future King. Still, the Opryhouse is a popular venue to visit while in town and one more piece in the Elvis puzzle. If you are looking for an inexpensive extreme sport that is pure adrenaline and addicting, rock climbing may be just what you need. When you start out, you are going to need to know some of the following lingo.

Rock Climbing Jargon

Rock climbing is one of those niche sports that gets little publicity, but is incredibly popular. It also happens to be one of the more adrenaline pumping things you can get out and do. Since it is pretty much you and the face of a click, the costs are limited to shoes and the gear to keep you from falling to your death. Put another way, it isn’t going to break the bank. Eventually, however, you will start planning climbing trips to Thailand and other exotic places, and it will cost a few bucks. Trust me, it is worth it.

If you are going to have a go at climbing, you need to know some of the basic jargon. Here we go…

“Elvis” – refers to the reaction of newer climbers when they first go beyond the comfort zone in the height of a climb. If you blow through 80 feet or so and start getting stressed, one of your legs may start to gyrate. It looks like you are dancing like Elvis, thus the name. To stop the Elvis, stop looking down at the ground and take slow, deep breaths.

Free climbing is the art of rock climbing without safety ropes. The advantage is it represents the purist form of climbing and is a quicker trip than with safety equipment. The disadvantage, of course, involves the fact there is nothing to save you if a fall occurs. At a minimum, we are talking broken bones. In a worst case scenario, well, you can guess. As a beginner, you should never, ever free climb.

Bouldering refers to rock climbing on large boulders found in valleys and other areas around the country. Bouldering is both fun and a good place to practice your technique. Boulders almost always have unique angles and edges, which can make them technically challenging. Since you are usually no more than ten feet off the ground, falling usually only damages your pride.

Buildering is rock climbing on buildings. Insanely fun, but also illegal. Falling is not recommended. Buildering is definitely not for the beginning climber. If you ignore this advice, make sure to take your driver’s license with you so the hospital will know who you are.

Chalk is a powder used by many to keep their hands dry during climbs. The chalk is kept in a chalk bag on your waste. You dip your hands in as you need to dry them off. If you are climbing in some remote location, it is highly advisable you wash the chalk off before driving home. Officers of the law, particularly Highway Patrolmen, often do not understand the difference between climbing chalk and other off white substances. I kid you not!
