A Beginner’s Guide to Buying Recording Gear

31 Mar

By Jonathan Richard Meager

Playing in front of an audience is only part of the fun for some musicians, as many also enjoy recording material from the comfort of their own homes or in a professional studio. But people who are looking to buy their own recording gear must consider a number of issues before making a purchase. First and foremost, what type of recording do you want to do?

Most recording equipment can produce results that would easily be good enough for professional release, while other options could be better suited to creating multi-tracked demos. And some may want to commit a band rehearsal or live performance to disc, rather than a studio track.

Musicians in all these categories therefore need the capability to record at least in two tracks, either in a standalone digital audio device or through computer-based software. At least one microphone is also an essential requirement, although additional mics can be particularly useful when recording instruments such as drums.

And before recording, a person should ensure they have the proper cables to meet their needs, as many mics for instance contain XLR connections, while guitar amps typically have jack sockets. If the digital audio recording device only contains inputs for one type of connection, adaptors can be purchased to enable both cables to be used. Mic stands can also be useful in ensuring optimum sound for your recording, so accessories such as these are certainly a worthwhile purchase.

Recording equipment needs to have a sufficient number of inputs, particularly if the project involves recording a live band. Microphones, guitars, drums and keyboards all need to be individually input into a recording device at the same time to give producers the chance to mix each instrument in isolation.

This means that at least four tracks of simultaneous recording capability are needed, as well as MIDI inputs and outputs. Separate microphones for each instrument and vocal will also be required, along with headphones and studio monitors for playback and overdubbing.

At this stage, recording artists may benefit from the use of outboard gear such as a mic preamp, a compressor, a channel strip and a mixer that has a sufficient number of channels. Other accessories at this stage could also include direct boxes, pop filters, studio foam, monitor stands, racks and recording furniture.

But what if a project needs to be recorded on a much larger scale? A 12-channel mixer or eight-track recorder may be insufficient to be cope with this, which means more specialised top-end equipment would be needed.

Bigger projects should only be recorded on a device that can deliver at least 16 separate tracks of simultaneous recording, and a selection of headphones and monitors will be required if the producer, engineer or musician wants to listen to the track with a critical ear.

Using different types of microphone may also be useful, as using a combination of dynamic mics such as the Shure SM58, through to ribbon and condenser mics, will make sure that all types of instrument are covered.

People engaged in larger projects could further benefit from incorporating a wide array of signal processors into their recording set-up, such as mic preamps, compressors, limiters, equalisers and effects units.

And finally, a much larger and higher quality mixing desk would be needed to do justice to the music being made. At least 24 separate channels will ensure that all the sounds can be suitably recorded, isolated, manipulated and balanced to produce the optimum result.

Elvis Memorabilia

26 Mar

By Ian C Brodie

Are you an Elvis freak? Do you feel caught in a trap out of which you can’t walk out? A trap of searching for all things Elvis? You are not alone. Some people will have suspicious minds about your addiction to Elvis memorabilia, but others will empathize. And by those others, I mean the millions of Elvis collectors all over the globe. For years anything remotely to do with Elvis has been hugely popular. Today, Elvis collectibles are just as popular as they ever were.

Memorabilia options are extremely numerous. You can get things that are cute, funny and of course very expensive. At a 2009 auction consisting of items from Elvis’ personal stuff, a 14K gold ring with diamonds and the face of an owl sold for $40,000. Also sold to the highest bidder was a blue and gold jumpsuit with cape which Elvis had worn in a 1972 Madison Square Garden concert. This item was bid up to $210,000.

Not all pieces of Elvis history are so overwhelming to the pocketbook. Savvy shopping on online auction and retail sites, careful sifting through yard and garage sale items and another visit to that cluttered and dusty attic of yours all just might result in an impressive haul.

Two hugely popular pieces of memorabilia are autographs and records. An authentic Elvis signature on a record cover, magazine article or poster is often quite valuable and is difficult to get outside of an auction. Since there are so many Elvis recordings, collecting 45 records and albums can seem endless. A lot of folks like to hang their Elvis records or otherwise display them rather than actually play them.

Do you worry that you will be cold on a winter night? Or in a cold Kentucky rain? Do not fear! Elvis has you covered-literally. There is a plethora of bedding, blankets, throws, fleeces, and quilts, featuring the face of The King, to keep you warm. Many times they come in their own collector’s storage tins. Of course you can’t forget the pillows. Elvis is on a large number of pillows too. What better way to get a good rest at the airport during a layover than by resting your head on a comfy Elvis travel pillow?

Perhaps you have a child who carries the torch for the latest generation of Elvis fans. Well, what kid wouldn’t be in seventh heaven if given an official Elvis lunchbox? For true devotees, you can get the pink “Love Me Tender” model with a matching thermos. After school, why not let your son or daughter invite his or her friends over for a spirited game of Elvisopoly?

No matter how many pieces you have in your collection, you will likely always feel as though you need something else. A clock is always a good idea. How about an alarm clock with the face of your beloved Elvis on the dial? Or for the more distinguished clock owner, there is a pendulum clock with Elvis’ legs acting as the pendulums. Something a little more subtle to think about is the Elvis fan cord figurine. Attach it to the fan pull cord and tada! Elvis cools off the room.

There is nothing unreasonable about having a burning love for Elvis memorabilia. Presley was an icon of music culture and still is today. His legend will continue to live for generations to come.

Great Elvis Costume Ideas

23 Mar

By Eddy Firestone

If you decide to dress up as Elvis this Halloween, there are many sources you can look to for inspiration. While we generally thing of Elvis’ career and appearance as being divided into two parts, the earlier and the later, there are many variations of costume that will be recognizable as The King of Rock and Roll.

When Elvis was just beginning his career as a performer, he would often wear a plain black suit. Provided the jacket is roomy enough, and the pant are wide legged enough to show movement, the added hairstyle and attitude will be more than enough for a decent Elvis costume. If you have no hair find a nice costume wig to substitute.

A classic picture and video of Elvis making a name for himself shows him wearing a light colored blazer with dark or black pants and a skinny tie. You’ll have to sing a few bars of a song, and show off some dance moves, but this one will work very well.

In one of his first big breakout hits, Jailhouse Rock, Elvis wore a modified jail costume. It combined a black and white striped t-shirt worn underneath a dark work jacket with matching dark work pants. This will be recognizable from miles away provided you create appropriate Elvis hair.

In 1957 Elvis received his draft notice, and while he was able to defer his army service to finish filming “King Creole” he did begin his service in 1958. There are a few variations on this costume and any of them will work. You’ll want to find either a standard olive green Army uniform with a wide round hat, or a beige button down with khakis and a forage or garrison cap. Also remember all Elvis costumes NEED a professional quality Elvis wig.

In the time just after his army service and before the jumpsuits of the 70’s there is a famous photo of Elvis wearing an all gold suit. The jacket is sleek and well cut and the pants are not fitted too tight. It’s worn with a white shirt and a gold skinny tie, and of course you must finish this look with a good head of Elvis hair. Any great Elvis wig(will do if you don’t have hair, and keep in mind people are using pink wigs as a new fad for Elvis hair.

One of his most well known and popular outfits is the classic white jumpsuit. This outfit is fitted with the exception of the bell bottomed legs. The shirt has a deep v-neck that shows the chest and a high collar to accentuate his kingly neck and head.

Another of his most popular and well recognized jumpsuits is the royal blue one he wore with a cape. There is a great video of him performing in this outfit showing off his dancing moves. The cape is a great accent if you’re going to incorporate some of his kung-fu hand movements and roundhouse kicks.

In his 1968 comeback special, Elvis wore classic head to toe leather. The pants were loosely fitted and flattering, and both the jacket and pants were black. This image of the classic bad boy revived his wilting musical career and kicked up his sex symbol status all the way to the top.
